FRIDAY, AUGUST 28
PROTEST ART: Start off your weekend by heading down to the National Building Museum which is opening a new outdoor exhibit on Friday. This exhibit will feature a series of murals with D.C. street art created during racial justice protests held earlier this summer. At the same time, six artists will be creating murals to commemorate the leaders of the 1968 March on Washington, including the late Rep. John Lewis. On Friday and Saturday, there will be moments of reflection, family-friendly art activities, and the artists will be on hand to discuss their art. THE END OF THE WORLD: Join Politics & Prose which is hosting an online conversation with author Mark O’Connell on his novel Notes From An Apocalypse. This dramatic telling about his travels around the world to survival bunkers, Chernobyl, and even New Zealand, each visit having to do with the end of the world. He’ll be in conversation with author Jenny Offill. (5 p.m., donations suggested)
WHAT A PAIR: The teams of Atlas Brew Works and Andy’s Pizza are teaming up for a virtual dinner night on Friday. Choose from two $45 meal options, which includes an appetizer, a pizza, and a mixed six-pack of three different beer pairings. The duo will be hosting the first in a series of Friday night beer pairings hosted by Atlas Brew Works and each dinner pairing will be followed by a virtual Zoom beer discussion with the brewery. GHOST HUNT: Is the Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail haunted? Find out live over Zoom on Friday night as Culpeper Paranormal investigates the Old Jail for any paranormal activities. As the museum is being investigated, a museum employee will tell real stories of spooky encounters at the museum. Since this is a virtual event, the ghost hunters will be able to enter rooms never seen by the public before. Tune in to be spooked. (7 p.m., $12)

SWEET SONGS: Classical Movements, which has been putting on a series of intimate garden concerts, is teaming up with the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts for a special concert in conjunction of the anniversary weekend of the March on Washington. This concert will include selections of music performed at the March, as well as arias from classic operas and works that reflect the legacy of Black American music. Grab a ticket to get a seat in the garden. (711 Princess Street, Alexandria, Va., 7 p.m., $45)
BOOK CRAWL: Independent Bookstore Day is on Saturday and local independent booksellers are going virtual. Participants are asked to purchase books from independent sellers and share their book buys on social media using #DMVBookstoreDay to be entered into raffles. There will also be behind-the-scenes peeks into stores, bookseller book picks, and more. A list of independent sellers is available online. (All day, prices vary)
AXE IT: Let out all of your anger at 2020 with Denizen’s Brewing Co. in Silver Spring. Along with Odyssey Mobile Adventure, the brewery is bringing back axe throwing on Saturday. For $10, you can throw 10 times. Social distancing and sanitation policies will be in place. (Denizen’s Brewing Co. in Silver Spring, 7 p.m., $10)

HAVE A PICNIC IN THE PARK: Don’t spend your socially-distant outdoor time hungry. Montgomery County parks has launched a new picnic in the park program. Nine parks are participating in the program and have designated picnic circles that are physically distanced from others. Parkgoers can order food from local restaurants directly to the park. SUNFLOWER FIELDS FOREVER: Sunday is your final chance to visit the Clarksville Sunflower Festival. Stroll through the blooming, golden fields of sunflowers, pick your favorites, and take photos. Contrary to other weekends, there will be no food trucks, music, or vendors, but don’t let that deter you. There are plenty of tickets throughout the day to choose from. DRIVE-THRU FAIR: The Howard County Fair isn’t happening in its entirety this year thanks to the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the delicious fair food.
